What we Americans generally refer to as koi, the colorful variety, Japanese more specifically call nishikigoi. In addition to the brilliant colors which so impress our eyes, the koi is also symbolism for affection and love as well as perseverance and courage. You've probably seen the koinobori, or koi climbing wind socks representing that preseverance. In Asian culture koi are also a delicacy. So when you decorate using koi fish art, you not only add color to your walls, but positive ambience knowing that koi are representative of positive emotions and traits.

Koi are impressive fish especially when you see them teeming in great numbers. You probably have seen a pond or other ornamental body of water filled with colorful koi. We visited a shrine near Kailua on Oahu several years ago. Crossing one of those bowed bridges that Monet depicts in one of his paintings, we were amazed to see the water below alive with a variety of colorful koi. They are an impressive sight.
